  • EA Sports MMA Demo Enters the Ring on Sep. 28

A demo for EA Sports MMA will be released on September 28 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, taking players to the world of mixed-marial arts as imagined by Electronic Arts. We last saw the game at E3.

    Screenshots of the demo
The demo will include four fighters across two weight classes--heavyweight and middleweight--in "Fight Now" mode for single bouts.

Fans can take control of current STRIKEFORCE heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, or utilize the brute strength of former professional wrestler, Bobby Lashley. The two middleweights featured in the demo are predominantly Jiu-Jitsu fight...

  • Shack PSA: Resident Evil 5 DLC Savings on Xbox 360

Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to snap up a selection of Resident Evil 5 downloadable content with a 40% discount on Xbox 360 thanks to this week's 'Deal of the Week,' Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hyrb has announced.

    • Untold Stories Bundle - An updated version of the Crackdown 2 downloadable content 'Toy Box' went live over the weekend, fixing the nasty bugs the DLC suffered when it launched on September 2.

"These issues were caused by problems mastering the DLC package," Gaz Liddon, studio head of developer Ruffian Games, reiterated in a forum post on Saturday. "They have now been resolved with a new version of the Toy Box DLC that Microsoft has released today."

Should you have previously downloaded a dodgy copy of the DLC, to fix your woes you'll need to delete the DLC from your system then re-download it. The errors caused the super-powered open-world game game to crash or...

  • Sniper: Ghost Warrior Multiplayer DLC Inbound

Although it had a shaky launch, City Interactive's Sniper: Ghost Warrior has some intense, well-crafted moments.

Those looking to create more moments--so long as slow-motion and bullets are involved--will soon have the chance to download five new multiplayer maps for the game.

Although press material for the DLC claims the content is currently available, it has yet to appear online for the PC or Xbox 360. No word on the price for either platform, but we're holding out hope it will launch for free as an apology for the game's launch issues.

  • PS3 Firmware Update Combats Jailbreak Devices

Sony has launched another mandatory firmware update for its home console, with hopes to close a hole in the system's security.

According to the BBC, firmware update 3.42 for the PlayStation 3 will combat the recently released USB device PS Jailbreak and other software-based emulating exploits.

Since it first appeared online for sale, Sony has battled to keep the USB dongle PS Jailbreak out of the hands of its customers. Using a security loophole, the device allowed gamers to play pirated software.

Sony would not detail the specific changes made in the update, but a representative told BBC: "As we always have, we will continue to take necessary actions to both hardware and software to protect the intellectual content provided on the PlayStation 3." Further detail on the European P...

  • Evening Reading: Labor Day Edition

It's been a quiet Labor [sic] Day here at Shacknews as the video games industry has mostly been out in the garden with a beer in one hand and a hotdog in the other, not to mention I've been working by myself. Still, I hope that whoever and wherever you are, you have come to appreciate the labouring classes a little bit more than you did before.

Me, I've been working hard all labour day so nobody appreciates long, hard slog better than me. Crumbs, what a gruelling day! I think I'll unwind by playing the PC version of Chime, which unlocked on Steam while I was writing this post. I already have the Xbox 360 edition but this'll make a fine addition to my netbook for travel fun.

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines Teased at PAX 2010

Though Gearbox was unsurprisingly focused on the news that it's helming Duke Nukem Forever and now owns the Duke property, at PAX the Borderlands developer gave a short update on its mysterious Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Several screenshots, hastily photographed [left] by Kotaku, of the four-player co-op shooter based upon the sci-fi action film were shown to a PAX panel audience.

"Our commitment is unfaltering," A patch for Borderlands will raise its level cap and rebalance the shooter RPG accordingly, developer Gearbox explained during PAX panel attended by Joystiq.

The free patch for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will raise the level cap to the hilarious number of 69 and, in the words of Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, "rebalance the original game around the level cap."

The level cap was previously raised to 61 in the paid downloadable content 'The Secret Armory of General Knoxx,' a move Pitchford explained Gearbox did not want to repeat otherwise "you'd have to buy every previous DLC" for the new...
